How to Upscale a Small Photo Without Making It Look Worse
By The Tech Brief Editorial Team · Published October 1, 2026
Upscaling enlarges a photo by adding pixels. AI upscalers estimate fine detail, which often looks sharper than simple stretching, but they cannot recover detail that was never captured.
Set expectations
Modest enlargements (about 2x) usually look best. Very small or heavily compressed images may show artificial textures or smoothed faces after upscaling.
Steps
- Start from the original file, not a screenshot or a re-saved copy.
- Choose a modest scale first and compare it to the original at 100% zoom.
- Check faces, text and fine patterns for odd artefacts.
- Export, then optimize the file size before putting it on a website.
Tools
Many editors and web tools offer upscaling. Vista Image Studio, our own free-to-try browser tool, includes AI upscaling and an optimize option. As the publisher, we disclose this is our product.
