How to Remove a Photo Background (Free Methods)

Removing a background lets you place a subject on white, a colour or a new scene. It is used for product photos, profile pictures, thumbnails and social posts.

Before you start

Use the highest-resolution original you have.
Pick a photo where the subject contrasts with the background.
Good, even lighting gives cleaner edges, especially around hair and fur.

Options

You can use desktop editors with selection tools, built-in phone features, or AI background removal tools that detect the subject automatically. AI tools are fastest for simple subjects; manual tools give more control for tricky edges.
